Private label in Germany starts with a specific retailer role

Germany's largest grocery systems use own brands, but they do not share one buying system. EDEKA combines independent retailers, regional wholesalers and a national headquarters. REWE also combines company-operated and independently run stores. Lidl and Kaufland sit within Schwarz Group, while ALDI Nord and ALDI SÜD have separate German territories and operating structures.

A manufacturer therefore needs a more precise proposition than “we can make private label for German supermarkets.” Define the retailer group, banner, category role, intended price position and supply scope first. Use our Germany supermarket group map to separate the businesses and formats before choosing a route.

This guide uses retailer and regulatory sources checked on September 14, 2026. Public forms and portals can change, and a submission does not imply buyer interest or approval.

Map the own-label proposition before you pitch

German retailers use own brands for several jobs. The names below illustrate current propositions; they are not standardized tiers shared by every retailer.

Examples of own-label propositions in German grocery retail
PropositionCurrent examplesWhat the manufacturer must define
Entry price and everyday valueEDEKA GUT&GÜNSTIG, REWE ja!, Kaufland K-Classic and the exclusive-brand assortments used by ALDI and Lidl.A product and pack specification that can meet the target price while protecting food safety, legal compliance and consistent quality.
Core rangeEDEKA Herzstücke and REWE Beste Wahl cover broad everyday assortments above the entry-price proposition.A clear category benchmark, sensory target, pack format and reason to replace or extend an existing item.
PremiumEDEKA Genussmomente, REWE Feine Welt and Kaufland K-Favourites use more elevated recipes, origins or presentation.Evidence that the ingredients, process, provenance or eating experience justify the higher shelf price.
Organic, regional and dietary needEDEKA Bio and Regional, REWE Bio, Regional and frei von, Kaufland K-Bio, PENNY Naturgut and ALDI BIO address different claims and shopper missions. The certification, traceability and claim substantiation required for the exact product. “Regional” is a sourcing proposition, not a substitute for an export story.
Plant-based and other category platformsPENNY's Food For Future illustrates a retailer-specific plant-based proposition.A retailer-relevant product gap, credible sensory performance and a specification that fits the chosen platform.

Retailer pages show the current brand architecture: EDEKA's brand overview, REWE's own brands, Kaufland's own brands and PENNY's assortment platforms. Check the live category before proposing an item because brand names alone do not reveal an open assortment gap.

Match manufacturer fit to the proposition

Which German retailers publish a supplier entry route?

Public access is uneven. Some pages invite a prospective supplier to apply. Others support companies that have already been selected or are being onboarded. Treating both as open buying routes wastes time and can send a proposal to the wrong system.

Publicly visible routes checked September 14, 2026
Retailer routePublic statusHow a manufacturer should use it
ALDI SÜD supplier applicationOpen prospective-supplier route. ALDI SÜD says it is continuously looking for suppliers and publishes an application process.Read the checklist, choose the relevant product area and submit only when the business can support the requested information. Official route.
Kaufland merchandise suppliersOpen prospective-supplier route. Kaufland explicitly addresses branded and own-label merchandise suppliers.Use the supplier entry page and the merchandise purchasing contact it provides. Official route.
Kaufland regional supplier formOpen, but locally scoped. Kaufland defines these local products as manufactured within a maximum 30-kilometre radius of the store.Use it only if the production location meets that definition. It is not a general export route. Regional supplier form.
REWE local partnershipsRegional and local route. REWE describes local contacts and partnerships with producers near its markets.Validate the relevant REWE region and the applicable local definition before approaching. Local partnership information.
REWE InnovationScoped innovation route. It invites food technology and strategic partnership proposals, including private-label development.Use it for a proposition that fits the stated innovation scope, not as a general category listing form. Innovation route.
REWE Group Supplier PortalInvitation-based supplier workflow. REWE's registration FAQ says registration takes place at the invitation of REWE Group Buying. This is not a public product-submission route. An invited company receives access data and the applications assigned to it after its registration information is checked. Registration FAQ.
EDEKA regional suppliersOpen, but regionally scoped. EDEKA directs prospective regional suppliers to a target market or named regional contacts and highlights fresh categories.Use the route only for a relevant regional proposition and expect product documentation and quality review. Regional supplier information.
EDEKA own-label questionnaireSelected-supplier workflow. The public documentation starts from the premise that the manufacturer has been selected for an own-label item.Use it to understand detailed product-data requirements after selection, not as a general product-submission form. Questionnaire documentation.
Lidl food guidanceProduct-development guidance, not a public application route. Lidl describes the guide as an overview of its food product-development and optimization requirements.Use it to understand recipe, ingredient and nutrition expectations. The document does not invite unsolicited product applications. Food supplier guide.
ALDI NordNo equivalent general open product-submission route identified in the public pages reviewed. This does not prove that the business is closed to new suppliers. Identify the relevant category and buying entity and verify the current route directly.

The distinctions above are deliberately narrow. A portal account, local-supplier form or innovation page does not guarantee access to a grocery category buyer.

Prepare the technical file before contacting a buyer

For goods manufactured outside the EU, work through our Germany food import regulations guide with the buyer and importer before fixing the factory, label and delivery route.

REWE Group says it drafts binding specifications with its private-label suppliers, audits those suppliers regularly and tests own-label products in its laboratories and through independent institutes. That makes the technical file part of the proposition, rather than paperwork to assemble after a commercial yes. REWE Group product quality.

  • Product specification: ingredients, allergens, nutrition, sensory standard, tolerances, shelf life, storage conditions and change-control process.
  • Food-safety evidence: current site certification, audit history, corrective actions, traceability test and recall contacts. Lidl's assortment page says many suppliers use IFS or BRC certification, but the buyer must confirm the exact accepted standard for the product and plant. Lidl assortment information.
  • Packaging and logistics: consumer unit, case, pallet, barcode, temperature regime, lead time, minimum run and delivery capability.
  • Legal and label review: prepare German-language mandatory food information under the applicable EU rules and validate every nutrition, origin, organic and environmental claim. Start with label and regulatory compliance support.
  • German packaging obligations: from August 12, 2026, the German Packaging Register says responsibility for system participation for retailer own brands lies with the retail company, whether the goods are sourced in Germany or abroad. The supplier still needs to provide packaging weights and material groups. For the PPWR manufacturer role, the guidance gives an exception when the commissioning company is a micro-enterprise and the packaged-product supplier is based in the same EU Member State. For third-party imports, producer responsibility follows the first party that makes the goods available within the German supply chain. Identify the statutory roles for the exact arrangement and document the operating handoffs; naming the supplier on the pack does not transfer the retailer's own-brand obligations. See the guidance on own brands and imports, registration and brand-name responsibility.
  • Commercial operating case: target specification cost, currency assumptions, annual and peak capacity, service level, contingency site, artwork timing and launch critical path.

A practical sequence for a Germany private-label proposal

  1. Choose one group, banner and proposition. State whether the offer fits value, core, premium, organic, dietary need or a specific category platform.
  2. Audit the live assortment. Compare pack sizes, price positions, claims, ingredients and origins in the relevant stores and online range. Record the date and region.
  3. Write the product gap in one sentence. Explain which shopper need or category role the proposal serves without claiming that a buyer has requested it.
  4. Build the evidence pack. Include the technical file, cost and capacity model, certification status, sample plan and the questions that still require retailer input.
  5. Use the verified route. Submit through an open application only where one exists. For a regional, innovation or current-supplier portal, stay within its stated scope.
  6. Control development risk. Agree the specification, forecast assumptions, test protocol, packaging responsibility, change control and launch decision points before spending heavily on tooling or inventory.

If the group structure or target format is still unclear, begin with the Germany supermarket comparison and a focused market diagnostic.

Frequently asked questions

Which German supermarkets sell private-label food?

EDEKA, REWE, PENNY, Lidl, Kaufland, ALDI Nord, ALDI SÜD and Netto Marken-Discount all sell substantial own-brand assortments. The relevant opportunity depends on the banner, category and proposition, not simply the parent group's size.

Can a foreign manufacturer apply directly to a German retailer?

Some retailers publish prospective-supplier routes. ALDI SÜD and Kaufland did so when this guide was checked. Other visible portals are scoped to local partnerships, innovation or established supplier workflows. Confirm whether the route accepts the product type and manufacturer location before submitting.

Does a food-safety certificate guarantee a listing?

No. Certification can be a technical requirement, but the product still needs a retailer-specific specification, credible economics, capacity and an assortment role. Ask the buyer which standards, audit scheme and laboratory tests apply to the item.

Is ALDI one buying organization in Germany?

No. ALDI Nord and ALDI SÜD operate separate German territories and publish separate company information. Do not transfer an application route or assumption from one to the other.
