The best US supermarket target is the retailer whose format, region, shopper and supplier process fit the product you can actually deliver. A national store count is useful context, but it does not prove that a chain is open to your category or that one listing unlocks every banner and location.
This 2026 shortlist keeps 11 widely relevant grocery retailers while separating supercenters, clubs, conventional supermarkets, discount grocery and regional operators. It is a buyer-planning guide, not a scored ranking or a claim that every retailer is accepting new products. Research checked September 14, 2026.
11 US supermarkets to evaluate for your F&B product in 2026
Use the table to decide which retailers deserve deeper research. The comparison table focuses on supplier fit; figures in the profiles below retain their reported geography, fiscal period and category definition. Our largest US grocery chains comparison records those scope differences and links to the underlying company filings.

Walmart
Walmart U.S. reported $285.5 billion in its grocery category and 4,611 segment stores for the fiscal year ended January 31, 2026. The grocery category includes consumables such as household and pet supplies, so it is not a pure food-sales figure. See the FY2026 filing, then start with Walmart's official supplier application and supplier requirements. Registration does not guarantee an agreement. Imported brands should confirm which application path applies and whether a U.S. operating entity, importer or distributor must support the proposal.
Kroger
Kroger operated 2,697 supermarkets in 35 states and D.C. at January 31, 2026, under regional banners such as Ralphs, Fred Meyer and Harris Teeter. See the fiscal 2025 filing. A national parent-company pitch is less useful than a proposal tied to a division, category and shopper. Kroger says prospective vendors can create a profile in Supplier Hub, but a prospect profile only expresses interest and does not award business.
Costco
Costco's limited-selection warehouse model makes pack size and value per unit central to the offer. Its fiscal 2025 annual report listed 629 U.S. warehouses, including Puerto Rico, at August 31, 2025. Prospective food and sundry vendors are directed to regional division offices on Costco's official vendor-inquiries page. Before approaching a region, model the club pack, delivered cost, pallet configuration, shelf life and volume you can supply consistently.
A retail listing and a distributor agreement are separate decisions
A distributor may move inventory, but it does not automatically secure a retailer's category approval. Work backward from the named retailer, market and pack format, then verify whether the account buys directly or through an approved distributor. Use our US food distributor comparison for channel discovery and our distributor selection guide to evaluate candidates and commercial responsibilities.
Albertsons Companies
Albertsons Companies reported 2,244 stores across 35 states and D.C. at February 28, 2026. Its banners include Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Jewel-Osco and ACME. Those banners make the operating market part of the decision. Specify the intended region, shelf price, category role and replenishment route instead of treating every store as one national opportunity. See the company's fiscal 2025 results and footprint.
Whole Foods Market
Whole Foods is a natural and specialty retailer inside Amazon, but Amazon's total company revenue is not a Whole Foods grocery-sales figure. The retailer described more than 550 stores across the U.S., Canada and U.K. combined in a May 13, 2026 newsroom release. Its potential-supplier page directs brands to review quality standards, register for the supplier portal and submit a form. Whole Foods states that submission does not guarantee a response.
Publix
Publix is a regional operator whose official facts page listed 1,442 stores on September 9, 2026, concentrated in the Southeast. Its retail-product supplier process is unusually concrete: identify the buyer, check the category review schedule, request an appointment and prepare the required item data and sample material. Publix also distinguishes branded retail products from Publix-branded product supply. Decide which proposition you are making before contacting the team.
H-E-B
H-E-B is a regional grocery business rooted in Texas, not a national chain. A May 2026 company announcement reported more than $50 billion in sales and 460 stores across Texas and Mexico combined. That combined footprint should not be presented as a U.S.-only count. Build a Texas-specific category and shopper case, then confirm the relevant H-E-B format, buying contact and supply route. See the company's May 2026 operating overview.
Meijer
Meijer serves six Midwest states through supercenters, grocery stores, neighborhood markets and express locations. The company's headline count of more than 500 includes all of those outlet types, so it is not a supermarket-only number. Its official company overview explains the format mix, while the December 2024 supplier guide provides a prospective-supplier overview. Match the proposal to the intended format and market rather than using the combined outlet total as proof of addressable distribution.
Check compliance and operating readiness before pitching
A retailer application does not replace U.S. regulatory work. Confirm the importer and Foreign Supplier Verification Program responsibilities where applicable, review the product's labeling and claims, and prepare product liability, food-safety, recall, item-data, case, pallet and shelf-life information. Our US food import guide and US food-labeling guide are starting points; the retailer's current category requirements still control its decision.
ALDI U.S.
ALDI's limited assortment and private-label emphasis create a different supplier case from a conventional branded supermarket pitch. The company said on January 12, 2026 that it planned to reach nearly 2,800 U.S. stores by the end of 2026. That is a plan, not a verified September store count. Assess whether you are proposing a branded item or private-label manufacturing, then test cost, capacity, packaging simplicity and the ability to meet the required specification. See the 2026 expansion announcement.
Stop & Shop
Stop & Shop is one of Ahold Delhaize USA's local supermarket brands, serving the Northeast. Do not apply the parent group's roughly 2,000-store U.S. footprint to this banner alone. A proposal should identify the Stop & Shop market, shopper, category and distribution path. Use the Ahold Delhaize USA company overview for ownership context, then verify the current banner-level buying route.
Wegmans
Wegmans reported 114 stores in nine states and D.C. in its 2025 impact report published April 6, 2026. The regional footprint can suit a focused East Coast launch, but fit depends on the category and execution plan. Wegmans also reported working with 400 family farms and local suppliers, which is evidence of its local sourcing activity, not a promise that an outside brand will be listed. See the company's economic-impact report.
Build a retailer shortlist you can defend
- Choose a launch region and shopper. Name the states, metro area, purchase occasion and retail format.
- Model the shelf economics. Work backward from a plausible shelf price through landed cost, distributor or broker costs, promotion, deductions, spoilage and payment timing.
- Confirm the buying route. Determine whether the category is bought directly, through a supplier portal, through a category review, or through an approved distributor.
- Prepare the operating file. Include GTINs, product specifications, labeling status, food-safety documents, case and pallet configuration, shelf life, insurance, capacity and recall contacts.
- Ask for a bounded trial. Define stores, duration, replenishment, promotion and the sales evidence that would support expansion.

FAQs about US supermarkets for food and beverage brands
What is the biggest supermarket in the US?
Walmart is the largest U.S. grocery retailer by the grocery-category sales it reports. Kroger is the largest traditional supermarket operator. The answer changes if you compare corporate revenue, grocery sales, store count or retail format, so use one definition throughout. See our scope-controlled retailer comparison.
What was America's first supermarket?
Piggly Wiggly's company history credits its first Memphis store, opened in 1916, with introducing the self-service grocery model. That historical label does not indicate present buying structure: many stores using a common banner can be independently owned or supplied through different wholesale systems.
Which supermarket is best for a new food product?
There is no universal best chain. Choose the retailer whose shoppers, region, price point, pack format, category process and replenishment requirements fit the product and launch resources. A focused regional trial can be more credible than a nationwide proposal when capacity or demand evidence is still limited.
Does supplier registration guarantee a listing?
No. Walmart, Kroger, Whole Foods and Publix all distinguish registration or submission from an award of business. Treat the published route as a way to enter consideration, then verify the category-specific decision process and required follow-up.
